Dijets Name Registry

Your name is your address

Every Dijets address is a long string of characters such as V-dijets1…. It is precise, but hard to read, impossible to remember and easy to get wrong. One mistyped or swapped character and the funds go somewhere else, permanently.

The Dijets Name Registry fixes this. You register a short, readable name, for example harbor or kite-shop. That name resolves to your Value Chain address, so anyone who knows your name can find and pay your address without copying a hash.

You can search, register and manage names today at Dijets Names.

What is the Dijets Name Registry?

The registry is a native part of the Dijets network. It is not a smart contract deployed on top of the chain, and it is not a database run by a company. Name records live in the state of the Method Chain (M-Chain) and are kept by the same validators and consensus that secure the rest of the network.

Each record says:

  1. The name, in one canonical form.
  2. The target, the Value Chain address that the name resolves to.
  3. The owner, the key or set of keys that may update, renew or transfer the name.
  4. The expiry, the date until which the registration is paid for.

Every change to a record is an M-Chain transaction. Every version of a record is kept in its history, so anyone can see when a name was registered, renewed, pointed somewhere new or transferred.

The registry is live on Dijets Mainnet from genesis.

What you can do with it

Dijets Names is the web app for the registry. It lets you:

  1. Search for any name and see at once whether it is available, registered, expired or reserved.
  2. Look up a registered name: where it points, who owns it, when it expires and its full history.
  3. Register an available name for any term from 30 days to 5 years.
  4. Renew a name before it expires, without losing it.
  5. Retarget a name to a different address of yours.
  6. Transfer a name to a new owner.
  7. Track your names, your balances on the V-, M- and U-Chains, and your registry activity in one portfolio.

Anyone can browse and look names up without signing in. To register or manage names, you connect Nodebook, the Dijets browser wallet. Every action is a transaction that you review and approve in your own wallet. Dijets Names never sees or holds your keys.

How registration works

Mainnet
Registration fee1 DJT, one flat fee for any term. The fee is burned.
Terms30 days to 5 years
Grace period30 days after expiry, during which only the owner can renew
Renew, retarget or transfer0.001 DJT, the standard M-Chain transaction fee

These figures are the registry's own consensus parameters, and Dijets Names reads them live from the network. Validators must agree on them, so no app, operator or node can quietly change them.

A name:

  1. is 3 to 32 characters long;
  2. uses only lowercase letters a–z, digits 0–9 and hyphens;
  3. starts with a letter and ends with a letter or digit;
  4. cannot contain two hyphens in a row, or a hyphen as its second character.

A short list of names that could be used to impersonate the network, such as dijets, wallet, support or validator, is reserved and cannot be registered by anyone.

How it benefits you

Payments people can read

Sending to harbor is easier to get right than sending to a 40-character address. A wallet or payment tool shows the name and the address it resolves to, so you can confirm both before you sign.

Nobody can point a name at your address without you

To make a name resolve to an address, the transaction must carry that address's own signature. This holds when a name is registered and every time it is retargeted. Nobody can attach a misleading name to your address, and nobody can claim that a name points to you when it does not.

Names that show who you are dealing with

Each address can have only one live name. A name therefore works in both directions: a name resolves to an address, and an address shows its name. Explorers and wallets can display harbor instead of a hash in the "From" and "To" of a transaction.

No surprises at expiry

When a name expires, it stops resolving at once, so payments are never sent to an address the owner has let go. It is not up for grabs immediately, though. For 30 days only the owner can renew it. A name becomes available to others only after that grace period, and the registry records it as a new generation of the name. Wallets and payment tools can then tell that the name now belongs to someone else.

Recovery without a middleman

A name's owner can be a single key, or a set of keys with a threshold, such as "any 1 of these 2". That makes recovery simple: register a name owned by your everyday key and a recovery key you keep somewhere safe. If you lose one, you can still renew, retarget or transfer the name with the other. No support desk, administrator or company key is involved.

What sets it apart

Built into consensus, not bolted on

Most naming systems are applications that run on a blockchain. The Dijets Name Registry is part of the blockchain itself. Its rules are enforced by every validator in the same way, its records are part of the network state, and resolving a name always reads accepted state. Every honest node gives the same answer for the same block.

No administrator key

There is no master key that can seize, freeze or reassign a name. A privileged key like that would be the most valuable target in the system, so the registry does not have one. Names change hands only by their owners' signatures, or by expiring and being released.

One name, one spelling

Names use plain ASCII only. There are no look-alike Unicode characters, no mixed scripts and no invisible characters. harbor can only ever be spelled one way, so nobody can register a name that looks identical but resolves to a different address. Non-canonical forms are rejected by the validators themselves, not just by the app.

Safer payments by name

Because a name could change between the moment you prepare a payment and the moment you send it, the Dijets payment service records the exact version of the name it resolved. If the record changes or stops resolving before submission, it refuses to send instead of paying a different address.

One flat fee, burned

Registration costs the same 1 DJT whether you register for 30 days or 5 years, and that DJT is burned, not paid to anyone. Renewing, retargeting and transferring cost only the standard transaction fee.

What's next

Dijets Names also includes a preview of a name marketplace and auctions. The registry does not yet support buying, selling or auctioning names, so the preview uses sample names and a sample account in your browser. It is clearly marked as a simulation and never touches the live registry. We are sharing it to gather feedback on how trading names should work before any of it is built into the protocol.

Hierarchical names such as shop.harbor are reserved for a future version, as is Unicode support with protection against look-alike characters.
